In the 9:00 am business meeting Friday morning, Joe Schwartz, Sponsor/Director of Florida State Open warmly welcomed all 12 players to Florida's Sunshine & Paradise and thanked them for participating in this years tournament event. He mentioned the players traveling the greatest distance. Joe expressed appreciation to several people who help him organize the event and then turned the tournament over to Dr. Richard Beckwith, tournament referee and scorekeeper. We played 11 rounds of 3-Move, 2 games per round of round-robin in a single division over the three day tournament.
Our daily tournament agenda allowed 2.5 hours per round: 3 rounds Friday which required 2 rounds before our 5:00 pm dinner reservation, 4 Saturday rounds, & 4 Sunday rounds with HomeTown Buffet reservations at 5:00pm each day. We had a variety of fruits, snacks, sandwiches, chips, nuts, cookies, water, drinks, coffee, etc. available all day (open kitchen) and a Big Thank you to Maria, who was there making sure we had plenty of everything.
The Tournament Prize Fund Payout Schedule, Round Pairings, and Tournament Score-Sheet were all posted on the mirror wall in the dining room.
We appreciated the donations from Joe Schwartz as $500, Earl Morrison $10 and Richard Beckwith $5 which totaled $755.00 for the total cash prize fund. This amount included the $20 entrants fee which totaled to $240 and it was also displayed on the wall.
Of course we appreciated Joe Schwartz, Tournament Director and Richard Beckwith, Referee & Scorekeeper for doing a great job putting on a well-run tournament.
Weather was nice, beautiful sunrise in the mornings, warm sunny days in the 75-85 range with a nice sea breeze during the tournament. We had balmy evenings, and pleasant nights with a waxing moon nearing full.
Joe's condominium was on the intercostals' waterway and you could see the Atlantic Ocean from Joe's balcony, and occasionally see a fancy yacht cursing up & down the waterway.
With the exception of a couple of players, this was a tournament of Masters level talent; however, no Master finish without at least one loss, Teal Stanley won a round (3 points) from Hallett on Sunday. John Webster won a round from Richard Beckwith (3 points) in that same ninety round on Sunday, and it looked like he might not lose a game until playing Earl Morrison in the last round (3 points) from a careless oversight.
Joe Schwartz and Earl Morrison are playing a separate Stake Match of 24 games following this tournament after a few days' rest.
Several wives attended with their checker playing husbands, I recall seeing Mickie Webster, Sue Tucker, and Solange Hinkle.
Dave Beachy from Sarasota, Andy Kravetz of Delray Beach, and Eric Strange from Colorado Springs were expected to play but didn't make it, maybe next FL Opening?
Several players spent a day sightseeing Hallandale after the tournament.
Joe was a wonderful host, opening his home during the tournament, treated us to dinner each day, and entertained the early arrivals to a day at the Miami Zoo and other sites.
A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
